Telangana: Unable to afford an ambulance, man carries wife's body on pushcart for 60 kms

New Delhi: Ramulu had to carry the body of his wife, Kavita on a pushcart for over 60 kilometres in Hyderabad since he had no money to pay an ambulance, reportedly.   He was asked for a sum of Rs.5000 by a private hospital to ferry his wife’s body to his native village. The amount was beyond Ramulu’s means who begged on the steets to eke out his livelihood. After pushing his deceased wife’s body for some 24 hours, Ramulu finally  broke down by the roadside and began to cry. He was not able to move on. Passersby who saw what happened came forward to help. According to media reports, they dropped some money beside the weeping Ramulu and called an ambulance to take the body to his village in Medak district. Both husband and wife were leprosy patients because of which Ramulu was discriminated against and was forced to perform his wife’s last rites without any family support. This incident is similar to that of Dana Majhi’s in Odisha. Majhi had to walk home from a hospital 80 kilometers away with his wife’s body on his shoulder because he was denied an ambulance by a government hospital. The public were outraged by the incident.
