Chennai: Students of SRM University at Kattankulathur of Chennai staged a demonstration inside the campus on Thursday night where the students alleged that there was no action by the administration on a sexual harassment complaint by a woman student of the varsity. They also said that the hostel warden delayed access to the CCTV footage of the elevator and the registering of a complaint by over two hours. Police authorities told The News Minute that the alleged staff worker has been arrested and based on the complaint filed by the hostel warden, the police registered a case under sections 354 (outraging the modesty of women) and 294 (B) (abusing) of the IPC.

SRM University Vice-Chancellor Sandeep Sancheti, however, denied the allegations of inaction by the protesters and said the administration would look into the complaint. "Students are discussing with us. Whatever the matter is, it will be taken care of. If there is a matter, it will be inquired," Sancheti told media.

It is said that a second-year undergraduate student of the university was allegedly sexually harassed by a male sanitation worker inside a women's hostel lift on Thursday afternoon around 3 pm. On one the student of the university said "the man masturbated in front of the woman student in the hostel lift, following which she reported the issue to the authorities," the student told media.

The employee was identified by the student in the CCTV footage. However she was asked to stay mum about the incident by the authorities," the protester said. The protester also alleged that the hostel authorities blamed the victim.

Earlier, in the national capital, a 26-year-old woman journalist thrashed a drunk man who allegedly masturbated in front of her inside a cluster bus passing through south Delhi.
