New Delhi: Jay Prakash Majumdar, a veteran BJP politician who was dismissed from the party in January this year, joined the Trinamool Congress in Kolkata on Tuesday.

Jay Prakash Majumdar joined the ruling TMC in the presence of West Bengal Chief Minister and party chief Mamata Banerjee.

Majumdar was appointed one of the vice-presidents of the TMC's state committee shortly after joining, news agency ANI reported.

Senior members of the ruling party, including Education Minister Partha Chatterjee and Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim, were present on the occasion.

Banerjee also addressed the ceremony, which was intended to honour International Women's Day, before Majumdar was officially welcomed.

"Jaiprakash Majumdar will be the TMC state vice-president," Banerjee was quoted by PTI in its report.

The BJP suspended Jaiprakash Majumdar, who has been attacking the state leadership of the saffron party for the last few months, in January. Besides, Majumdar, Ritesh Tiwari was also suspended from the BJP for anti-party activities.

Both were BJP state vice-presidents.

Since the TMC's landslide win in the 2021 Assembly election, a slew of BJP politicians, including former Union minister Babul Supriyo, have defected to the TMC.

A number of TMC defectors, including Mukul Roy, Sabyasachi Dutta, and Rajib Banerjee, have also rejoined the party.

The majority of them had joined the BJP months before the Assembly election.
