Sushma Swaraj, a senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former foreign minister, passed away in Delhi on August 6, 2019. Remembering the veteran leader on her death anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Sushma Swaraj served India selflessly and was an articulate voice for India at the world stage.

Taking to his official Twitter account, PM Modi also shared a video of his speech at a prayer meet where he had hailed the star minister as one of India’s most respected leaders. he had termed Swaraj as a leader who diligently served India and highlighted various aspects of her public life.


Sushma Swaraj's husband Swaraj Kaushal and daughter Bansuri also wrote heartfelt messages on Twitter in her memory. "Ma, you are always with me as my strength. Krishna look after my mother!" the former minister's daughter tweeted.


Remembering predecessor, External Affairs minister shared a collage of pictures from his days in the foreign ministry along with a caption: "Today, more than ever, remember her fondly. Always an inspiration."

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also remembered Swaraj on her first death anniversary. Shah in his Twitter post said, "Sushma ji was a towering figure of Indian polity, an outstanding parliamentarian and a brilliant orator who dedicated her entire life in the service of the nation."


Swaraj was called India's 'best-loved politician' by the US daily Wall Street Journal. Quick-witted and articulate, Sushma Swaraj was well regarded in the BJP for her oratorical skills. She also strongly espouses causes such as cow protection which are close to the heart of BJP's ideological mentor Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
