In a notable move, the Supreme Court of India conferred the senior designation upon 11 women lawyers on Friday. This is a significant milestone, as only a dozen women advocates have received this honour since the establishment of the Supreme Court in 1950, news agency ANI reported. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud led a committee that interviewed over 200 applicants for senior advocates.

A total of 56 lawyers, including 11 women and 34 first-generation legal practitioners, were granted the esteemed status of senior advocate during a full-court meeting held on Friday. This decision came into effect on January 19, 2024, as per an official notification issued by the Supreme Court, ANI reported.
