Supreme Court Creates History As It Designates 11 Women As Senior Advocate In Single Day

A total of 56 lawyers, including 11 women and 34 first-generation legal practitioners, were granted the esteemed status of senior advocate.

In a notable move, the Supreme Court of India conferred the senior designation upon 11 women lawyers on Friday. This is a significant milestone, as only a dozen women advocates have received this honour since the establishment of the Supreme Court in 1950, news agency ANI reported. In addition, the court also bestowed senior designation upon 45 other male advocates. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud led a committee that interviewed over 200 applicants for senior advocates.

A total of 56 lawyers, including 11 women and 34 first-generation legal practitioners, were granted the esteemed status of senior advocate during a full-court meeting held on Friday. This decision came into effect on January 19, 2024, as per an official notification issued by the Supreme Court, ANI reported.
