The Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, on Tuesday recommended the elevation of five High Court judges to the apex court, ANI reported. The fresh list of recommendations includes judges from Bihar, Rajasthan, Manipur and Uttar Pradesh.
The judges are Justice Pankaj Mithal (Chief Justice of Rajasthan HC), Justice Sanjay Karol (Chief Justice of Patna HC), Justice PV Sanjay Kumar (Chief Justice of Manipur HC), Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah (Judge of Patna HC) and Justice Manoj Misra (Judge of Allahabad HC).
Currently, the top court is functioning with 28 judges as against its sanctioned strength of 34. If these recommendations are cleared by the Centre, the working strength of the Supreme Court will rise to 33.

Last month, the names of 10 judges recommended for elevation by the Supreme Court Collegium did not receive approval from the Central government.
Justice Pankaj Mithal is currently Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court. Previously, he was Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, a report in Bar and Bench said. He was also a judge in the Allahabad High Court.
Justice Sanjay Karol, the current Chief Justice of Patna High Court, was earlier the Chief Justice of Tripura HC. He also served as the acting Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court.
Justice PV Sanjay Kumar is Chief Justice of Manipur High Court. He was previously a judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court and Telangana High Court.
Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah, presently a judge of the Patna High Court, also served at the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
Justice Manoj Misra is serving as a judge at the Allahabad High Court. He was elevated as an additional Judge on November 21, 2011, as per a report in Bar and Bench. He took oath as permanent judge of the Allahabad High Court on August 6, 2013.
