New Delhi: Former Maharashtra chief minister Sharad Pawar on Sunday hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Union government for their leader's support to 'The Kashmir Files'.


He said it was "unfortunate that people in power" promoted the film directed by Vivek Agnihotri.

"A man made a movie (The Kashmir Files) showing atrocities on Hindus. It depicted that majority always attacks minority and when that majority is Muslim, the Hindu community gets insecure. It's unfortunate that people in power promoted this movie," Nationalist Congress Party president said, as quoted by news agency ANI.


In another event on Sunday, Sharad Pawar stressed, "Today, efforts are being made to create a rift in the country's unity in the name of Hindu-Muslim. NCP will never support casteism or a divide on religious lines. All those who believe in protecting the interests of the society need to come together."


'The Kashmir Files' film has garnered widespread attention since its release on March 11.


Sharad Pawar's remarks come as the film attracted conflicting views as several senior leaders such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have appreciated it while Opposition leaders like Omar Abdullah, Arvind Kejriwal, and Jairam Ramesh have criticised it.


'The Kashmir Files' was declared tax-free in several BJP-ruled states including Uttar Pradesh, Tripura, Goa, Haryana, Gujarat, and Uttarakhand.


Recently, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief and former Jammu-Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti had criticised the BJP for supporting the Vivek Agnihotri directorial saying, "In Jammu and Kashmir, everyone faced atrocities. If the BJP and the PM had done something for the Kashmiri Pandits the way they are promoting the film (The Kashmir Files), their situation would have been different today." 


Ahead of this, J&K National Conference leader and former CM had alleged that several parts of 'The Kashmir Files' film are "false".


"Many false things have been shown in 'The Kashmir Files' movie. During that time, Farooq Abdullah was not Jammu and Kashmir's Chief Minister but Governor rule was there. VP Singh's government was there in the country which was backed by BJP," Omar said, as quoted by ANI.
