New Delhi: Sanjay Kothari took oath as the Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) on Saturday, a statement issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan said. Kothari was sworn in as the Central Vigilance Commissioner at a ceremony on Saturday at 10.30 hrs at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He made and subscribed to the oath of his office before the President of India Ram Nath Kovind.


CVC is the anti-corruption watchdog with autonomous status. It is free of control from any executive authority. It also has the responsibility of monitoring all vigilance activities in the central government.

Here's all you need to know about the newly appointed Central Vigilance Commissioner

1. Kothari is a Haryana Cadre IAS Officer from 1978 batch with a Master’s Degree in Physics and a Master's Degree in Business Administration from the United Kingdom.

2. He has served as District Magistrate, Gurgaon; Home Secretary, Union Territory of Chandigarh and Chairman, Managing Director, Director and Secretary, Haryana Tourism.

3. He has also been Secretary, Revenue and Rehabilitation, Personnel, Health, Cultural Affairs, and Public Relations in the State of Haryana.

4. In the Government of India, he has worked in the Ministry of Tourism, Administrative Reforms & Public Grievances and Pension Departments.

5. Since August 2012 he has been designated as Secretary to the Government of India, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions.

6. Kothari has served in various positions both at the Centre and the state cadre. He has spent about fifteen years in the field of tourism, both at Centre and State level and more than 5 years in Personnel and Administrative Reforms in the State of Haryana.

7. He was appointed as the chief of the government's head-hunting agency, the PESB, in November 2016.

8. The primary concern and interest of Mr. Kothari have been in the creation of institutions, often innovative and pioneering and carrying out reforms for ‘Good Governance’ and documenting them.

9. He has published more than 30 articles on administrative reforms, city development, and subjects pertaining to tourism. He was the creator of SurajKund Craft Mela in 1987.

10. He has authored a book in 2007, entitled “Good Governance Initiatives and Reforms”. Kothari is an enthusiastic sportsman and had represented School and College in Badminton, Athletics, and Cricket. He also had an inclination in playing Golf. He has been promoting different games, and particularly Golf, by setting up Golf Courses and organizing tournaments.
