New Delhi: Minister of State for External Affairs Dr RajKumar Ranjan Singh on Thursday said that India’s stance remains neutral on the issue of tensions between Russia-Ukraine.

Russia launched a special “military operation” in Ukraine, warning that any attempt by countries to interfere with the action would lead to “consequences they have never seen”.

Union MoS Dr RajKumar Ranjan Singh on Thursday said, "India's stand is neutral & we hope for a peaceful solution."

Meanwhile, India is closely monitoring the rapidly changing situation. The focus is on the safety and security of Indians, particularly students.

"We are closely monitoring the rapidly changing situation. Focus is on safety and security of Indians, particularly students. MEA control room is being expanded and made operational on 24x7 basis," sources told news agency ANI.

While at the 15-nation UN Security Council meeting, India had called for an immediate de-escalation of tensions between Russia and Ukraine and cautioned that the situation is in danger of spiraling into a major crisis.

It is the fourth meeting since January 31 as the tensions continue to spiral between Russia and Ukraine.

India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador TS Tirumurti told the Council that New Delhi had only two days ago at the Council meeting on Ukraine called for urgent de-escalation of tensions and emphasised sustained and focused diplomacy to address all issues concerning the situation.

"However, we note with regret, that the calls of the international community to give time to the recent initiatives undertaken by parties to diffuse tensions were not heeded to. The situation is in danger of spiraling into a major crisis, he said.

India expressed its deep concern over the developments, which, if not handled carefully, may well undermine the peace and security of the region.
