Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram has trained guns at the Centre over the Morbi bridge collapse in poll-bound Gujarat saying that it was shocking that nobody from the government has apologised or resigned after the tragedy which claimed the lives of more than 135 people.
Addressing a press conference in the state, he said, "the Morbi bridge collapse has brought shame to the fair name of Gujarat. The most shocking development is that no one, on behalf of the govt, has apologized for the tragedy. No one has resigned, taking responsibility."
He added, "Gujarat is governed from Delhi and not by chief minister."
On the BJP's promise of implementing the Uniform Civil Code if voted to power in Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat, Chidambaram said, "Even a child knows Uniform Civil Code can't be implemented by states, but by law of Parliament: Chidambaram on BJP state govts announcing to form a committee to implement UCC."
Chidambaram, who was here to campaign for his party, also claimed that Gujarat was being "run from Delhi" and not by the chief minister of the state.
The Gujarat Assembly polls will be held in two phases on December 1 and 5 and the counting of votes will be taken up on December 8.
Asked if he thinks central probe agencies like the CBI and ED were being misused, Chidambaram claimed that “they are handmaidens of the BJP. Ninety five per cent of the arrests they are making are of politicians of opposition parties."
Aggressive campaigning is underway by all parties ahead of the crucial Gujarat Assembly elections which will be held in two phases. The last election saw a tight fight between the Congress and the BJP for the 182-seats assembly.
The BJP has won six consecutive assembly polls in Gujarat. The Congress is keen to take an early decision on candidates to give them more time for campaigning and is seeking to bolster its campaign through yatras.
