NEW DELHI: The state of Jharkhand has implemented the 10 per cent reservations in government jobs and higher education for the economically backward sections in the general category. Chief Minister Raghubar Das said “the economically weaker section of the general category will get 10 percent reservation benefits in educational institutions and government jobs in Jharkhand state.”
“In the light of the historic decision of the PM Modi government of giving 10 percent reservation for the economically weaker sections, the Jharkhand state has decided to give the benefits of this reservation in the state institutions and government jobs” Das said.
In a press statement issued, it states “constitutional provision to provide 10 per cent reservation in government jobs and education to economically backward section in the general category will come into force after 15th January 2019.”
The Constitution (103 Amendment) Act, 2019 received the assent of the President on Saturday. The Act amends Articles 15 and 16 of the Constitution, by adding a clause which allows states to make "special provision for the advancement of any economically weaker sections of citizens".
These "special provisions" would relate to "their admission to educational institutions, including private educational institutions, whether aided or unaided by the state, other than the minority educational institutions".
It also makes it clear that reservation would be "in addition to the existing reservations and subject to a maximum of 10 per cent of the total seats in each category". The bill was passed by Parliament on January 9.
