Republic Day 2023: Ahead of the 74th Republic Day celebrations, a total of 901 police personnel have been awarded Police medals, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced on Wednesday. 140 have been awarded Police Medal for Gallantry (PMG), 93 received President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (PPM) and Police Medal for Meritorious Service (PM) has been awarded to 668.
Out of the 140 Police Medal for Gallantry recipients, 16 have been awarded posthumously.
Police Medal for Gallantry is awarded for conspicuous acts of bravery in saving lives, and property, preventing crime or arresting criminals. President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service is given for outstanding service in the police force, and the Police Medal for Meritorious Service is awarded for notable service marked by resourcefulness and dedication to duty.
Home Ministry on Wednesday also announced President’s Medals to Fire Service, Home Guards and Civil Defence personnel on the occasion of Republic Day 2023.

Police Medal for Gallantry Winners
Out of 140 Gallantry Awards, 80 are being given to the police personnel from areas affected by Left Wing Extremism and 45 to those from the Jammu & Kashmir region. Of those receiving awards, 48 are from the CRPF, 31 are from Maharashtra, 25 are from the J&K Police, 9 are from Jharkhand, 7 each from Delhi, Chhattisgarh, and the BSF, with the rest coming from various states and CAPFs.
