A canopy at the passenger pickup and drop area outside the Rajkot airport terminal in Gujarat has collapsed amid heavy rains. The incident comes a day after a similar incident at the Delhi airport killed a person and injured six.
This is the third such incident in as many days.
No injury has been reported yet. The Rajkot International Airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 27, 2023.
Centre Ordered Safety Review Of 157 Airports
The Rajkot incident was the third airport terminal canopy collapse in three days. On Thursday, the canopy of the newly inaugurated Dumna airport terminal in Jabalpur collapsed. The Jabalpur airport building was inaugurated by PM Modi on March 10 this year.
On Thursday, a portion of the roof outside the Delhi airport's Terminal-1 collapsed.
Right after the twin accidents at the Delhi and Jabalpur airports on Friday, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said that he had ordered a review of the safety at all 157 airports across India.
The Centre also announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for the family of Delhi accident victim and Rs 3 lakh for the injured. "It is a very unfortunate incident that happened at the Terminal 1 of Delhi Airport, which killed one. We extend our condolences to the family of the deceased. All the injured are undergoing treatment. One of them has been discharged. A Rs 20 lakh compensation will be given to the family of the deceased and Rs 3 lakh compensation will be given to the injured," Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said.
