The Central government on Thrusday has filed a review petition in the Supreme Court against its order allowing the release of all convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

The apex court had pronounced its judgements on November 11 post which all the accused were released from jail on November 12.

Accordinf to PTI, the Centre said the order was passed without affording it adequate opportunity for hearing despite it being a necessary party to the case. It also highlighted the alleged procedural lapse, saying the convicts seeking remission did not formally implead the Centre as a party which resulted in its non-participation in the case.

Earlier, the Supreme Court ordered the premature release of Rajiv Gandhi assassination convicts including Nalini and RP Ravichandran. The SC also held that the provisions under which Perarivalavan was released were also applicable to them. The Court gave the order in the case moved by Nalini and RP Ravichandran.

The Congress party had expressed displeasure over the judgement. General Secretary in-charge Communications, Jairam Ramesh expressed his disappointment with the Supreme Court’s decision to free the remaining killers of former PM Rajiv Gandhi and called the decision unacceptable and completely erroneous. Ramesh said that the party criticizes it clearly and finds it wholly untenable.

"The decision of the Supreme Court to free the remaining killers of former PM Shri Rajiv Gandhi is totally unacceptable and completely erroneous. The Congress Party criticizes it clearly and finds it wholly untenable," the Congress MP said. He further said, "It is most unfortunate that the Supreme Court has not acted in consonance with the spirit of India on this issue."

After her release, Nalini addressed a press conference as said that Priyanka Gandhi turned emotional and cried when she met her in the Vellore Central Prison over a decade ago. Now, a Congress party leader, had then sought to know about the assassination of her father and Nalini said she divulged whatever she knew, Nalini added.

She said, Priyanka Gandhi met me in jail and she asked me about her father's killing. She got emotional for her father. She cried too.”
