Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath, a senior Congress leader, stated on Friday that Rahul Gandhi will be the opposition's prime ministerial candidate in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, news agency PTI reported.
According to a PTI report, Nath praised Gandhi for conducting the Congress' nationwide Bharat Jodo Yatra, saying he is not in politics for power but for the benefit of the country's common people.
"In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, Rahul Gandhi will not only be the face of the opposition but also its prime ministerial candidate," he stated.
Nath further claimed that no one in history has ever performed such a long 'padayatra'. According to the Congress leader, no family has made more sacrifices for the country than the Gandhis.
"Rahul Gandhi does politics not for power, but for the people who make anyone sit in power," he stated.
The former Madhya Pradesh chief minister is the sole leader to support Rahul Gandhi's candidature for the 2024 elections.
The 76-year-old Congress chief of Madhya Pradesh further stated that "traitors" had no place in the party after betraying the organisation, as per the report.
When asked if Jyotiraditya Scindia may rejoin the party in the future, Nath responded, "I would not comment on any individual, but those 'traitors' who betrayed the party and violated the faith of its workers, there is no place for them in the organisation," according to the report.
He further stated that the old pension scheme would be reinstated in the state as soon as Congress takes power in Madhya Pradesh.
Nath stated that the BJP may replace any chief minister, but it would be pointless because the people of Madhya Pradesh had already decided to vote for the Congress, as per the report.
He also stated that the state would implement organisational changes in ahead of the assembly elections.
Madhya Pradesh will go to the polls later next year, with the Congress hoping to oust the BJP.
