Rahul Gandhi Lok Sabha Membership: The Lok Sabha Secretariat on Monday restored the membership of Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi after the Supreme Court on Friday (August 4) stayed his conviction in the ‘Modi’ surname remark case. The Congress leader was disqualified from the lower house in March 2023 after a Surat court sentenced him to two years in prison in the case. Congress workers began celebrating outside 10 Janpath, the residence of Sonia Gandhi, and AICC headquarters in Delhi soon after Lok Sabha Secretariat restored the Lok Sabha membership of Rahul Gandhi.

Reacting to the development, Congress took to X (formerly Twitter) and said, "Nafrat Ke Khilaf Mohabbat Ki Jeet (victory of love against hate)."

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said that the development brings relief to the people of Wayanad and advised the BJP to utlise the remaining time of its tenure on 'actual' governance.

"The decision to reinstate Shri @RahulGandhi as an MP is a welcome step. It brings relief to the people of India, and especially to Wayanad. Whatever time is left of their tenure, BJP and Modi Govt should utilise that by concentrating on actual governance rather than denigrating Democracy by targeting opposition leaders," he tweeted.

Meanwhile, speaking on the restoration of Rahul Gandhi's MP status, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said, "Speaker took the decision today. We followed the legal process and immediately after receiving the Supreme Court's order, we restored it..."

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said that the SC order has restored the faith in democracy and courts.

"As far as the Congress leaders and Rahul Gandhi are concerned, I would like to congratulate them on the restoration of the membership. I also congratulate the Supreme Court. After this decision, the faith in democracy and the courts has increased," he said.

Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav said, "I congratulate Rahul Gandhi and thank the Speaker for not delaying the restoration."

Former Union Minister and Congress MP P. Chidambaram said that the party is happy that the Speaker took the decision today itself.  "He (Rahul Gandhi) can now attend the Lok Sabha," he added.
