For the uninitiated, Rahul Gandhi has come up with a series of videos where he breaks down his take on economic slowdown in the country – the decisions he feels are responsible for the same.
He had previously talked about the Narendra Modi led central government’s decision of demonitisation and economic measures that according to Gandhi have led to the downfall of the unorganised sector in India.
In his new video, Wayanad MP begins by pointing out that GST was UPA’s idea and as per their plan it was about making it simple, easier to understand, bearable and having only one true tax to be paid.
However, he says the NDA’s GST is complicated for people to understand and it is not one but four taxes with the rate going as high as 28%.
Gandhi once again brought in the angle of businessmen getting benefitted while lower-income classes have to bear the cost.

“Small and medium businesses cannot pay this tax whereas the bigger enterprises can have multiple accountants to handle it,” Rahul said in his video.
“Why are there 4 different rates? They are there because the government wants people with influence to be able to make suitable tweaks/changes. While those who do not have any influence are unable to do anything about it,” he added.
The former Congress president also touched the issue of centre finding itself to unable pay the state governments their share of GST. The Finance ministry had attributed the situation to the coronavirus crisis. However, Rahul Gandhi cites the GST design as the cause.
He finally calls GST a failure and an attack on the poor of the country, “It is an attack on small shopkeepers, small and medium business owners, farmers and labourers”.
Whether the Union Finance Ministry or any member of the BJP reacts on the statements made, remains to be seen.
