Former Punjab Deputy CM and Congress leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has said that the Supreme Court should first end the pollution of Delhi and Haryana, adding that farmers of Punjab are being defamed. His remarks came after the top court slammed the Punjab government for not being able to contain stubble burning and asked to "immediately" stop the same. The court also asked Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh to put a halt to burning of crop residue amid rising pollution in Delhi.
"Supreme Court should first end pollution of Delhi and Haryana. Earlier Kejriwal used to defame us but now it's their govt in Punjab. It's GoI's responsibility. The farmers of Punjab who give grains to the country are being defamed today," Randhawa said.
The apex court on Tuesday asked the Punjab government to stop the stubble burning. The Supreme Court observed that there can't be a political battle all the time. The court said, "We want it (stubble burning) stopped. We don't know how you do it, it’s your job. But it must be stopped. Something has to be done immediately."
The top court has also directed the state governments of Punjab, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan to stop stubble burning immediately and made the local Station House Officer (SHO) responsible for implementing the court’s direction under the supervision of DGPs and the Chief Secretary.
The court also asked the Chief Secretaries to conduct a meeting, physically or through Zoom, and discuss the issue at hand.
