Punjab Assembly Elections: 32 farmers' organisations of Punjab said on Saturday that they will not support any party in the upcoming assembly elections (Punjab Assembly Elections) in the state or will not take part in elections. On the other hand, today, a leader of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) formed a political organisation to contest elections. These farmers' organisations were a part of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha which led the movement against the Centre's Farm laws.
It was decided in a joint meeting at Mullanpur Dakha, about 20 kilometres from Ludhiana to neither support any political party nor participate in the elections. It termed the decision of Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Gurnam Singh Chadhuni to form a political organisation and contest Punjab elections as his personal decision.
He said that the Congress, the ruling party in Punjab, had promised to waive off all kind of loans of the farmers and withdraw cases registered against farmers during the protests against farm laws, but so far the government has not initiated any action regarding it, farmers' organisations will not accept anything lesser than these two demands.
Farmers should get electricity
The resolution that was passed in the meeting demanded that the agriculture sector be provided with electricity during the day time so that farmers do not face any problem. Earlier, farmer leader Gurnam Singh Chadhuni formed the 'Sanyukta Sangharsh Party' on Saturday and said it will contest the Punjab assembly elections next year. He advocated for opium cultivation in the state.
New party to be formed by Chadhuni
Chadhuni is a member of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) which is an organisation of 40 farmers' associations. SKM led a year-long farmers' movement against the Centre's three Farm laws. These laws were later repealed. "We are forming a Sanyukta Sangharsh party," Chadhuni said while addressing the media here.
