new Delhi: The Pune Municipal Corporation has set up a committee to investigate the steel structure collapse incident that claimed the lives of five workers and left two severely injured.

Pune Municipal Commissioner, Vikram Kumar told news agency ANI that the prima facie evidence shows that the support of the foundation of the structure failed, and the department is taking help from experts to identify the cause of the accident.

“An order has been issued to set up a committee led by a senior officer to investigate the steel structure collapse incident. Prima facie, it looks like support to the foundation of the structure failed. We're taking the help of technical experts,” Kumar said.

The accident took place late Thursday evening when a heavy steel structure in an under-construction building collapsed and fell on the labourers. According to ANI, the construction of a mall was underway in the Shastri Nagar area of Yerwada in Pune.

Deputy Police Commissioner, Pune Police, Rohidas Pawar said, “Five people have died on spot, two are critically injured while three have suffered minor injuries. The primary report suggests that precautionary measures are not in place at this site.”

The Pune police have registered an FIR against the contractor and detained three others in the case, said Pune Police Commissioner Amitabh Gupta. The five workers who died in the accident are identified as labourers from Bihar.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to express condolences to the family of the deceased. “Pained by the mishap at an under-construction building in Pune. Condolences to the bereaved families. I hope that all those injured in this mishap recover at the earliest,” he tweeted.
