Students of Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Punjab's Jalandhar gathered in large numbers to hold a protest on Tuesday after a first-year student died by suicide on the college campus. The protesting students alleged this was the second suicide reported on the campus in the past 10 days, IANS reported.
Amid heavy police deployment, the protesting students demanded to know the reasons behind both the suicide cases. They said that news about the last suicide had gone unreported as university authorities settled the issue "within closed doors".
Kapurthala Police investigating the matter said the student was “having some personal issues" as suggested from a suicide note recovered from the hostel room of the deceased.
"We received info at around 5:30 pm on September 20 that a first-year student of B. Design at Lovely Professional University died by suicide. We reached the spot and recovered a suicide note which cited personal reasons; further investigation is underway," Kapurthala Police said.
LPU in an official statement on the suicide of a student said it extends "full support to the authorities for a further probe."
"The initial investigation by the Police, and the contents of the suicide note point towards personal issues of the deceased...The University mourns the loss of the student and expresses its condolences to the bereaved family," the statement read.
Massive protest at LPU comes just days after controversy rocked the Chandigarh University campus in Punjab’s Mohali.
Some students alleged that a hosteller recorded several objectionable videos of female students in the common washroom and shared them further.
