Protests erupted across the country on Friday, with demonstrators demanding action and the arrest of suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and her former party colleague Naveen Kumar Jindal for their statements against Prophet Mohammed.

 

Protests took place in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Ranchi, Ahmedabad, Navi Mumbai, Ludhiana, Hyderabad, and Jammu and Kashmir, with violencein certain regions.

 

Authorities in the affected areas shut down the Internet and increased security as they clamped down on demonstrators reportedly participating in the violence and skirmishes with police, arresting over 250 individuals in Uttar Pradesh alone.

 

On Saturday, a bandh was held in Jharkhand's capital, Jodhpur, in response to a plea by Hindu organisations to stop the violence. Around 2,500 police officers were deployed, and the district's internet service was halted.

Delhi


After Friday prayers, hundreds of protesters carrying banners yelled chants against Sharma outside the famous Jama Masjid in Delhi, and police made many arrests. While some protestors left the scene after some time, others stayed to demonstrate, according to a senior police officer.


According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Shweta Chauhan, a complaint has been filed in connection with Friday's demonstration outside the Jama Masjid under section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (disobedience to order properly promulgated by public servant), and further investigation is underway.


West Bengal


In Uluberia, Howrah district, protesters clashed with police who attempted to dismantle roadblocks and charged them with lathi charges. At least ten demonstrators were detained, and the IG of South Bengal hurried to the scene with a huge police force.


From 1.22 p.m., demonstrators blocked NH-16 in numerous locations and railway lines at Chengail, Fuleswar, and Santragachi stations in the Howrah-Kharagpur section, according to a South Eastern Railway official.


Internet services have been suspended throughout the district until June 13, and prohibitory orders have been issued in some localities, including Uluberia, Domjur, and Panchla, until June 15.


Authorities in Murshidabad district likewise stopped internet services till June 14 on Saturday.


After an emergency meeting at the state secretariat, the West Bengal government made a police reshuffle in the Howrah district, naming Praveen Tripathi, Additional CP of Kolkata Police, as the new Commissioner of Police of Howrah City and other officers.


Sukanta Majumdar, the head of the BJP in West Bengal, was detained near a toll plaza on Vidyasagar Setu on his way to the violence-plagued Howrah district on Saturday afternoon, prompting the party to stage protests in different districts. "His visit could have created a law and order situation. This is a preventive arrest," a senior police officer told PTI.


Uttar Pradesh



Following Friday prayers, protests erupted in many locations across the state. Sloganeering was reported in Saharanpur, Moradabad, Rampur, and Lucknow, according to a senior officer at the Uttar Pradesh Police headquarters in Lucknow.


After the Friday prayers in Prayagraj's Atala neighbourhood, people chanted slogans and threw stones. To maintain peace and order, a large police force was deployed in the region. Senior police and government officials have also arrived on the scene.


Police in Uttar Pradesh announced that 255 persons have been arrested across the state. Police officers in Saharanpur and Prayagraj warned anyone held under the National Security Act will face consequences.


Prashant Kumar, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), stated in a statement on Saturday evening that 68 people were detained in Prayagraj, 64 in Saharanpur, and 50 in Hathras.


Ambedkarnagar had 28 arrests, Moradabad had 27, Firozabad had 13, Aligarh had three, and Jalaun had two.


According to the ADG, 13 FIRs have been filed in connection with Friday's demonstrations, including three each in Prayagraj and Saharanpur, as well as one each in Firozabad, Aligarh, Hathras, Moradabad, Ambedkarnagar, Kheri, and Jalaun.


Jharkhand


Two persons were killed in Ranchi after Friday prayers amid a violent demonstration against controversial remarks about Prophet Muhammad made by suspended Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled leader Naveen Jindal, news agencu ANI reported.


After demonstrations erupted with hundreds of people demanding Sharma's arrest, several police officers were hurt in Ranchi while attempting to manage an enraged throng near Hanuman Temple, which is located on the capital city's Main Road, police said. To manage the throng that poured out into the road after Friday prayers and threw stones and yelled slogans, police shot in the air and used lathi-charge.


“Few policemen have been injured. We are looking into the situation. We are reinforcing deployment," a senior police official told PTI. 


A big throng gathered on Main Road, yelling anti-Sharma and anti-Jindal chants. To handle the situation and prevent any unfortunate incidents, a large security deployment has been created.


According to authorities, the demonstration began early in the morning and gathered up speed after Friday prayers. Many businesses and restaurants shut their doors in protest of the statements.


Telangana


Protests occurred outside Hyderabad's Mecca Masjid over the same problem. Protesters were eventually removed from the area after police involvement. A police force and the CRPF have been deployed in the area.


Maharashtra 


A big number of people take part in a protest march against Nupur Sharma in the state's Solapur district and Navi Mumbai.


“I would like to tell people of the state that situation across Maharashtra is under control and peaceful. Everyone, from all religious backgrounds, must try and continue that peace. Police were prepared. Only peaceful protests were seen in state," said Maharashtra Home Minister Dilip Walse-Patil. 


Karnataka


According to police, miscreants hung an effigy of Sharma from an electric wire outside a mosque on Fort Road in Belagavi, mimicking a public execution. They stated that because the matter sparked public concern, police and the city municipal corporation swiftly removed it.


Unknown miscreants have been charged with fostering hostility amongst communities and disrupting society's harmony, according to the police.
