New Delhi: Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said his sister Priyanka Gandhi who was recently appointed as the party’s General Secretary for Eastern Uttar Pradesh shall play a major at the national level. Giving an interview to a leading media daily,  the Congress president added that given Priyanka’s appointment as General Secretary meant that she would have a major role to play in the party’s political affairs at the national level and not be only restricted to Uttar Pradesh itself.


He added that he assigns a role and responsibility to a person within the party ranks and file. If the person comes out in discharging his duties, he hands them with another responsibility.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday returned from abroad and met Congress president Rahul Gandhi at his Tughlaq Road residence. Party sources said Priyanka Gandhi would be present at a meeting of AICC general secretaries and in-charges of various states, called in Delhi on Thursday evening to plan the strategy for the Lok Sabha election due by May.

Priyanka Gandhi is learnt to have also met other Congress leaders with whom she discussed the strategy for Uttar Pradesh-East, of which she has been appointed the general secretary. Congress general secretary for UP-West Jyotiraditya Scindia was also present during Priyanka Gandhi's meeting with Congress leaders.

In the interim, Priyanka Gandhi’s office in New Delhi from where she would function as the party’s General Secretary was made ready and functional by the Congress party workers. A board was put up outside her office with her name and designation. It is notable that the same office was occupied by her brother Rahul when he held the appointment of General Secretary.

Rahul Gandhi has also called a meeting of state chiefs and Congress Legislature Party leaders on Saturday in the national capital, to review preparedness for the general election.

Congress president dismissed the newly coined description of the Mahagatbandhan versus the Bharatiya Janata Party as chaos versus claiming that while the opposition parties are united, it is the BJP which is in a state of chaos due to the frictions between the top leaders and PM Modi.

Responding to a question on the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Rahul said that his focus was to strengthen the party’s position in Uttar Pradesh by forging some strategic alliances amid the newly formed alliance between Bahujan Samaj Party and the Samajwadi Party
