New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday extended his greetings to the people of Gujarat on the occasion of Gujarati New Year.

આજથી પ્રારંભ થતું નવું વર્ષ….આપના જીવનમાં સુખ અને સમૃદ્ધિનો ઉજાસ પાથરે, આરોગ્ય નિરામય રહે તથા પ્રગતિના નવા સોપાન સર કરનારું બની રહે એવી અંતઃકરણ પૂર્વકની મનોકામના સાથે નૂતન વર્ષાભિનંદન.....॥

The new year starting from today will bring happiness and prosperity in your life, keep you healthy and lead you to a new step of progress,” PM Modi added.

This festival of lights marks the beginning of Bestu Varas, i.e. Gujarathi New Year as it is celebrated a day after Diwali. As per the Hindu Calendar, it falls on Shukla Paksha Pratipada in the Hindu month of Kartik. As per the Indian Calendar based on Lunar Cycle, Kartik is the first month of the year and the New Year in Gujarat falls on the first bright day of Kartik (Ekam).

This day also marks the beginning of their new fiscal year, so it becomes especially important to businessmen and traders, so this day people close their old account books and open new ones. These account books, known as Chopda, are worshipped and marked with some auspicious symbols followed by a prayer for a profitable financial year.

The Gujarati New Year is also coinciding with Govardhan Puja celebrations in North India, which takes place on the next day of Diwali every year.
