It is expected to deliver faster and more reliable mobile and landline telecom services at par with other parts of the country.

The move will provide high speed bandwidth of 2X200 gigabytes per second between Chennai and Port Blair, the capital of Andaman and Nicobar and then 2X100 gigabytes per second between Port Blair and 7 different islands of Andaman and Nicobar.

Areas to benefit:

The project envisages better connectivity from Chennai to Port Blair and seven other Islands - Swaraj Deep (Havelock), Long Island, Rangat, Hutbay (Little Andaman), Kamorta, Car Nicobar and Campbell Bay (Great Nicobar).

It is to be noted that the importance of Andaman-Nicobar in terms of strategic security has increased over the last few years. Andaman-Nicobar has become an important hub to check Chinese activities at sea.

How will it boost economic activities:

The cable connectivity is expected to transform life in the remote Island including defence, business and tourism sectors.

It is said that the enhanced telecom and broadband connectivity will boost tourism and employment generation in the islands, give an impetus to the economy and raise standards of living . It will facilitate delivery of e-Governance services such as telemedicine and tele-education as well.
