New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday met family members of the late Karpoori Thakur, former Bihar chief minister, who was last month bestowed Bharat Ratna, the nation's highest civilian honour.
According to PTI, the family, led by his son JD (U) leader and Rajya Sabha member, Ram Nath Thakur, met PM Modi at his residence in 7, Lok Kalyan Marg. Expressing his delight at meeting the family of the revered socialist leader, PM Modi highlighted Karpoori Thakur's remarkable contributions to uplifting the backward and deprived sections of society. He emphasised that Thakur's life and ideals continue to serve as a beacon of inspiration for all citizens of the country.
PM Modi posted in Hindi on X, "Karpoori ji has been the messiah of the backward and deprived sections of the society, whose life and ideals will continue to inspire the countrymen".
Later, Ram Nath Thakur thanked PM Modi on behalf of his family, the state of Bihar, and marginalised communities, reported PTI.
Ranjit Kumar, the former chief minister's grandson, described the occasion as joyous, akin to a second Diwali, with celebrations including the bursting of crackers and distribution of sweets among family members.
He further said that PM Modi called them a day after the announcement of the Bharat Ratna. He recounted the PM's cordial interaction with each family member and his invitation to a meeting in Delhi, which made them feeling deeply honored. "I felt that the prime minister was one amongst our family", he remarked, as per PTI.

Karpoori Thakur, often referred to as the "Jan Nayak" or people's hero of Bihar politics, posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian honour.
