PM Modi Takes Stock Of Situation As Excessive Rainfall Brings North India To Its Knees

Heavy rainfalls have been wreaking havoc in several states of the country including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and national capital Delhi. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday took stock of the excessive rainfall situation in various parts of the country. He spoke to the senior ministers and officials and reviewed the situation and reviewed the situation. "PM @narendramodi spoke to senior Ministers and officials, and took stock of the situation in the wake of excessive rainfall in parts of India. Local administrations, NDRF and SDRF teams are working to ensure the well-being of those affected," said the Prime Minister's Office in a tweet on Monday. 

Heavy rainfalls have been wreaking havoc in several states of the country including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and national capital Delhi. 

A red alert was issued by the India Meteorological Department for Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand while a yellow alert was issued for Delhi. 

Incessant rains caused the Beas river to swell in Himachal Pradesh and triggered landslides in Uttarakhand resulting in road blocks and traffic snarls. Several footage shared on social media showed bus and trucks being carried away with the water current and trees being uprooted in Himachal Pradesh. 

Himachal Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu appealed to the people of the state to remain indoors and his government set up helpline numbers. 

At least 34 people died in various districts of Uttar Pradesh due to rainfall related incidents in the last 24 hours. Like other north Indian states, Uttar Pradesh too has been witnessing excessive rainfall causing a rise in river water levels, hitting traffic movement in cities, and inundating farms in rural pockets.

Of the 34 people, 17 died due to lightning, 12 died by drowning while five were killed due to excessive rains. Five people died by drowning in Raibareilly while 4 died in Bareilly followed by Santkabirnagar and Badaun with two casualties each. 

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal held a press conference on Monday as Yamuna river in Delhi flowed near the warning level. He said that evacuation of people in low-lying areas around Yamuna will start once river breaches 206 metre mark. "In touch with Central Water Commission in view of rising Yamuna water levels; predictions indicate flood situation won't arise," he added.
