New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tribute to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 31st death anniversary. Taking to Twitter, Modi wrote, “On his death anniversary, paying tributes to our former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi.”
Meanwhile, Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also paid homage to the former PM on Saturday by visiting Vir Bhumi in Delhi.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, remembering his father, also took to Twitter to pay tribute to him. He wrote, “My father was a visionary leader whose policies helped shape modern India. He was a compassionate & kind man, and a wonderful father to me and Priyanka, who taught us the value of forgiveness and empathy. I dearly miss him and fondly remember the time we spent together.”
Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram and Sachin Pilot also visited the Vir Bhumi in the national capital.
Rajiv Gandhi was India’s youngest Prime Minister who took the charge in 1984 after the assassination of his mother and India’s former PM Indira Gandhi. Rajiv Gandhi became the PM at the age of 40. He served as the PM till 1989.
Born on August 20 in 1944, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) suicide bomber during an election rally in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu on May 21, 1991.
Other senior Congress leaders also paid tribute to Rajiv Gandhi via Twitter on his death anniversary.
