PM Modi Announces To Observe August 14 As 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day'

PM Modi on Saturday announced to observe August 14 as the 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day' in remembrance of "sisters and brothers displaced" during the partition of the Country.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced to observe August 14 as the 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day' in remembrance of "sisters and brothers displaced" during the partition of the Country.

Taking to his official Twitter account a day ahead of Indian Independence Day, PM Modi  expressed that 'partition's pains can never be forgotten'.

In a series of posts on the microblogging site, PM Modi said, "Partition's pains can never be forgotten. Millions of our sisters and brothers were displaced and many lost their lives due to mindless hate and violence. In memory of the struggles and sacrifices of our people, 14th August will be observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day."

"May the Partition Horrors Remembrance Day keep reminding us of the need to remove the poison of social divisions, disharmony and further strengthen the spirit of oneness, social harmony and human empowerment," the Prime Minister added added.

Indians are gearing up for the 75th Anniversary of India's Independence Day that will take place tomorrow, August 15. Observed as a national holiday, the Prime Minister of India wil hoist the tricolour flag at the Red Fort. The ceremony is followed by cultural events.

India liberated itself from British rule on this day in 1947, scripting the freedom with the blood of tens of thousands who sacrificed their lives. Even as India achieved independence in 1947, the event marked country's separation and division into two major dominions - India and Pakistan.

The Dominion of India is today the Republic of India (since 1950); while the Dominion of Pakistan was composed of what is known today as the Islamic Republic of Pakistan (since 1956) and the People's Republic of Bangladesh (since 1971).
