New Delhi: Amid the hot political debate on rising petrol and diesel prices in India, BJP released a graphic information with the title 'truth of hike in petroleum prices’ which has however  landed the party in a controversy, with Congress grabbing the opportunity to troll the ruling party with its version of the graph.

The BJP tweeted from its official handle a graphic that showed how the rate of hike in petrol-diesel prices is lesser as compared to those in UPA times.

It shows how between May 16 2009 to May 16 2014, petrol prices experienced 75.8 % hike where prices tossed to Rs 71.41 from Rs 40.62 within  a period of 5 years.

The graphic depicts that in BJP’s rule, percentage of growth of petrol prices reduced to 13 %.  Petrol prices increased from Rs 71.41  to Rs. 80.73 at a much lesser rate.

While BJP tried to show dip in percentage increase in price, Twitterati noticed only the difference in current price of petroleum and prices back in 2014 and trolled the post.

Later Congress shared BJP’s tweet with a caption: “When you have to hide a 343% increase in taxes, but don't know how. Even we couldn't resist retweeting this ;).

It then shared what it claimed to be correct representation of percentage increase in petroleum prices with percentage change in international crude oil prices, saying, "There! Fixed it for you".

In the last tweet that showed difference between petrol prices in India at the same international crude oil price, Congress write: “India, here’s why we are better at handling the economy and why you should vote us back to power.”

Here are some reactions of netizens to BJP's tweet.
