Hike In Fuel Prices Halts After 21-Day Continuous Surge; Petrol, Diesel Priced Over Rs 80 In Delhi; Check Rates In Other Cities

New Delhi: After continuous spurt for 21 straight days, the hike fuel price hike in India finally came to a halt on Sunday with no increase in prices. On Sunday, the cost of petrol in Delhi is Rs 80.38 per litre, while diesel is a bit more costly at Rs 80.10 per litre. The last hike was on June 27, which pushed petrol prices up by rs. 0.25 per litre and diesel by rs 0.21 per litre. Rates differ from state to state depending on the incidence of value-added tax (VAT). It is to be noted that oil marketing companies have been adjusting retail rates in line with costs after an 82-day break from rate revision amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. These firms on June 7 restarted revising prices in line with costs.
Meanwhile, the Congress party had termed the increase in price of petrol and diesel as "unjust" and "thoughtless" and urged the Central government to roll back the increase with immediate effect and pass on the benefit of low oil prices directly to people. The fuel prices have been on a continuous surge since June 7. In a first, Diesel price for the very first time crossed the petrol in the national capital on Wednesday (June 24) hitting Rs 79.76 a litre. The rates of the carbon fuels differ from state to state depending on how much VAT do the state governments levy .However, diesel is costlier than petrol only in the national capital territory where the state government had raised local sales tax or VAT on the fuel sharply last month.
