‘Peace Will Be Restored In Manipur Soon’: PM Modi Assures Nation During No-Trust Debate

PM Modi said that central and state governments are doing everything possible, adding the accused will get the strictest punishment. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday assured that peace would be soon restored in Manipur, which has been in the grip of ethnic violence for more than three months as a result of clashes between Metieis and Kukis. Modi’s remark came as he spoke on the no-confidence motion brought against his government by the Opposition in the Lok Sabha over the issue of Manipur. He said that central and state governments are doing everything possible, adding the accused will get the strictest punishment. 

"Both the state and central governments are doing everything possible to ensure that the accused get the strictest punishment. I want to assure the people that peace will be restored in Manipur in the coming time. I want to tell the people of Manipur including women and daughters of Manipur that the country is with you,” he said in the Lower House of Parliament.

• Calling north-east "jigar ka tukda" (piece of our heart), Modi said that the problems of Manipur are presented in such a manner as if they had begun in the recent past." 


• "Some may or may not be here, but we will find a solution to this challenge together," he said, adding that Home Minister Amit Shah had apprised the House about the situation of Manipur in great detail on Wednesday. 


• "Peace will be established there. There will be no let up in efforts to ensure that Manipur walks on the path of progress once again," he said. 


• The PM said that the turn of events started in the northeastern state after a decision of the court which triggered a cycle of violence. "Several families faced difficulties, many lost their near and dear ones .. women face grave crimes. These crimes are unforgivable. The central and state governments are making every effort to ensure that the culprits get stringent punishment," he said.


• Digging up the past pointing towards Congress's "neglect", Modi referred to the incidents such as the use of Air Force to attack the people in Mizoram a radio transmission of the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1962 leaving the people of the northeast to fend for themselves during the Chinese invasion. 


• Modi also mentioned the bombing of the statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at the Museum of Azad Hind Fauj in Moirang. He said that in the current government, the ministers have done 400 night stays in various district headquarters of the Northeast and he himself has visited the region 50 times.

During the initial phase of PM’s speech where he trained guns on Opposition, massive sloganeering was witnessed from the other side who demanded his words on Manipur. 

The no-confidence motion was defeated in the Parliament as the ruling National Democratic Alliance enjoys a comfortable majority in the House. 

During his speech, Modi targeted the Congress-led INDIA bloc saying the no-confidence motion was a floor test of the Opposition and that the Bharatiya Janata Party would secure a majority in the 2024 Lok Sabha election. 

Replying to the debate on the no-confidence motion moved by Congress, PM Modi said, "I had said during the no-confidence motion in 2018 that it was not a floor test for us but a floor test for them and as a result they lost in the elections."

"In a way, Opposition's no-confidence has always been lucky for us. Today, I can see that you (Opposition) have decided that NDA and BJP will come back in 2024 elections with a grand victory, breaking all previous records, with the blessings of the people," the PM further said.
