A day after Bharatiya Janata Party’s hat-trick in the assembly election of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, the saffron party is set to corner the Congress-led Opposition in the Winter Session of the Parliament starting Monday as a report recommending expulsion of TMC MP Mahua Moitra is expected to be presented in Lok Sabha today.

On Sunday, counting of the elections to the four legislative assemblies took place with the BJP sweeping the three Hindi heartland states. Congress, which hoped to unseat the saffron party in MP and retain Chhattisgarh, experienced a resounding defeat.

The party, however, won big in Telangana and ousted Bharat Rashtra Samithi.

Here are the top points for day one of the Winter Session of the Parliament.

  • For the first day of the session, the report of the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee recommending expulsion of Moitra from Lok Sabha in a ‘cash-for-query’ case is listed for tabling in the House.

  • The government is also expected to move a motion to adopt the recommendations of the Ethics Committee in the Lower House of the Parliament which would mean expulsion of the Trinamool Congress MP.

  • The TMC has insisted on a debate on the report of the Ethics Committee at the meeting of the floor leaders of the political parties chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in the Parliament.

  • Ahead of the beginning of the Winter Session, leaders of the Opposition I.N.D.I.A bloc would meet in the chamber of Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge to chalk out their strategy in both the Houses, reported PTI quoting sources.

  • Among the bills that will be tabled in the Parliament include the new bills to replace the IPC, Criminal Penal Code and the Evidence Act besides the bill on appointment of the chief election commissioner and other election commissioners.

  • An all-party meeting of the floor leaders took place on Saturday presided over by Rajnath Singh.

  • The meeting was attended by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh, Gaurav Gogoi and Pramod Tewari, TMC leaders Sudip Bandyopadhyay and Derek O'Brien and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Fouzia Khan, among others.

  • Following the meeting, Congress MP Manish Tewari said that the Opposition has demanded a discussion in the House on issues such as the situation in Manipur, rising inflation, "misuse" of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the "imposition" of Hindi through the names of laws, particularly in reference to the three bills to replace criminal laws.

  • Shiv Sena called for a discussion on the issue of  reservation for the Maratha and Dhangar communities, which were a subject of a hot debate in Maharashtra.
