Background

Parliament Winter Session Live: Please follow this space for all the latest news and developments of the Winter session of the Parliament. The Winter session of the Parliament is set to resume on Monday after both Houses were adjourned on Friday amid protests and sloganeering by the opposition over a host of issues including Adani bribery charges and Manipur violence.

Ahead of the beginning of the session, the floor leaders of the INDIA bloc parties are scheduled to meet at the Parliament House office of Congress President and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday at 10 am.

On Friday, both Houses of Parliament saw huge commotion as opposition MPs staged protests both in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha against the rejection of adjournment notices for a discussion on allegations against the Adani Group and the violence in Manipur and Sambhal.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla rejected adjournment motion notices by Opposition MPs on various subjects. Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar also dismissed all 16 notices from various Opposition parties under Rule 267.

However, a motion to extend the duration of the Joint Parliamentary Committee examining the Waqf (Amendment) Bill up to the last day of Budget Session 2025 was adopted by the House.

Condemning the uproar, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar said this cannot be appreciated. “We are creating a very bad precedent," he said adjourning the House till Monday.

"Our actions are not public-centric. We are getting into irrelevance… We have virtually become a laughing stock,” he said.

A huge uproar was seen in the Lok Sabha too where Speaker Om Birla initially adjourned the House till 12 noon. But as the sloganeering continued Presiding Officer Dilip Saikia had to adjourn the House till Monday.

The Winter session of the Parliament began on Monday with proceedings being adjourned as the opposition started protesting in both Houses. On Tuesday, the Parliament had no business on account of Constitution Day.

The proceedings had to be again adjourned on Wednesday due to sloganeering which continued on Thursday and Friday as well.
