India on Friday said it was keeping a close watch on developments in the neighbourhood having a bearing on national security and taking "appropriate" action if required.
The statement was made by Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal against the backdrop of an increase in engagement between Bangladesh and Pakistani military officials.
According to reports, Pakistani spy agency ISI's Director General of Analysis, Maj Gen Shah Amir Afsar and certain other officials are currently on a visit to Bangladesh.
The Pakistani military officials are visiting Dhaka after a delegation of Bangladeshi military officials toured Pakistan and held meetings with the three service chiefs.
"We keep an eye on all activities around the country and in the region, as well as all activities affecting national security, and the government will take appropriate steps," Jaiswal said in response to a question at his weekly media briefing.
He said that India's approach towards Bangladesh has been to maintain friendly ties.

"We support a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. We want to strengthen our ties so that the people of India and Bangladesh can prosper," he said.
On Bangladesh objecting to India constructing a fence along the frontier between the two nations, the MEA spokesperson said it is aimed at countering criminal activities such as human and cattle trafficking.
He highlighted that the construction work is covered under the existing bilateral agreements.
India-Bangladesh relations have witnessed a sharp downturn after ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled Dhaka in August last year owing to nationwide anti-government protests.
The relations saw a further dip after the interim government in the neighbouring country headed by Muhammad Yunus failed to contain attacks on minorities, especially Hindus.
During the press briefing, Jaiswal reiterated India's stance against illegal immigration and affirmed that the MEA will facilitate the return of Indian nationals found residing illegally abroad, provided their nationality is verified.
