Earlier on Thursday, ahead of the meeting of the bloc, posters and hoardings showing the leaders of the bloc were put up in Mumbai. The bloc comprises 26 Opposition parties that decided to present a united front to face the BJP juggernaut in next year’s general elections.
On the day 2 of the meeting, the coordination committee will be elected. This panel will streamline the working of the alliance across India. The committee will decide the national agenda, common campaign issues, and common programme outlines. A logo of the group will also be unveiled at the third meeting of the Opposition. According to sources, the Trinamool Congress had a significant role to play in the design of the logo. Sources said the logo will reflect the nation's identity and diversity.
The Opposition will also decide on a research department and Secretariat for election management. The Opposition will also decide on a media coordination team and a social media team to strategise and disseminate information ahead of the Lok Sabha election 2024. The election of convener/coordinator is not on agenda. However, if some leaders raise the issue, the convener/coordinator may also be elected by the end of Friday.
Earlier on Thursday, the Bharatiya Janata Party hit out at the opposition as it set the stage for its third meeting in Mumbai. Dubbing the INDIA bloc as a “selfish alliance”, BJP leader Sambit Patra alleged it of promoting and protecting the interests of families at the helm of its member parties. “The meeting of 'Ghamandia Gathbandhan' is going to take place in Mumbai today. These parties have done scams and corruption worth Rs 20 lakh crores. It's a selfish alliance...Their agenda is maximum profit from corruption,” Patra said.
“This selfish alliance already has six contenders for the PM post so far. I believe people know that the country has achieved many milestones under PM Modi's leadership, and their trust continues to be with him," said Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya.
