In a remarkable turn of events, a 52-year-old woman from Odisha, who was presumed dead following a house fire and transported to a cremation ground, astonishingly opened her eyes just moments before the pyre was to be ignited. The incident unfolded in Berhampur town, located in the southern district of Ganjam, as per the family's account on Tuesday, PTI reported.
After coming back from the cremation ground late Monday evening, the woman's relatives living on Goods Shed Road took her to MKCG Medical College and Hospital a few hours later.
The woman, who came from a low-income household, was taken to the same hospital on February 1 after suffering over 50% burn injuries in a home fire. However, upon being referred to another medical facility by the hospital authorities, her husband opted to bring her home due to financial constraints. Since then, she has been battling for her life, according to family sources cited by PTI. Her husband Sibaram Palo said, “On Monday, she was not opening her eyes and it appeared she was not breathing. We thought she might have died. We then informed others in the locality."
Odisha Woman's Husband Took Her To Cremation Ground Without Medical Advice
According to the PTI, without seeking medical advice or obtaining a death certificate, Palo proceeded to transport what he believed was his wife's body to the nearby cremation ground at Bijipur, making use of a hearse from the Berhampur Municipal Corporation.
"The funeral pyre was nearly prepared when she suddenly regained consciousness. Initially, we were taken aback, but upon calling out to her, she responded. It's truly miraculous," recounted K Chiranjibi, a neighbor of Palo who accompanied the family to the cremation ground.
Upon being notified, the local corporator arranged for her to return home using the same hearse. Subsequently, she was readmitted to the hospital for further medical care.
