Mohan Charan Majhi has been elected as the Leader of the BJP Legislative Party in Odisha, marking his ascent as the new Chief Minister of the state. The announcement was made on Tuesday, following the BJP's majority win in the 147-member House a week earlier. MLAs Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and Pravati Parida have been named as Deputy Chief Ministers, as announced by senior BJP leader and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

Rajnath Singh, in his address following the Legislative Party meeting, stated, "When we invited nominations for the Chief Minister's post, KB Shignadev was the first to stand up and propose the name of Mohan Majhi. Everyone supported this proposal and applauded it. Therefore, I am announcing Mohan Majhi as the unanimously elected Leader of the BJP Legislative Party in Odisha."

Singh further added, "After discussions with the Chief Minister, it was decided that it would be best to also announce Shri Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and Shrimati Pravati Parida as Deputy Chief Ministers. Hence, their names have also been announced."

Following the announcement, newly elected BJP MLA Prashant Jagdev said, "BJP is forming government in Odisha. The confidence of Narendra Modi has been proven right. The people of Odisha are filled with new hope and excitement."

BJP leader Aparajita Sarangi echoed these sentiments, saying, "The BJP will start its innings from tomorrow. On this occasion, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the people of Odisha for reposing faith in the BJP and all of us. With their blessings, we will work very hard."

Odisha BJP MLA Purna Sethi added, "The double engine government will bring development to Odisha and fulfil PM Modi's dream of providing houses to every person."

Besides Rajnath, the meeting was attended by Union Minister Bhupender Yadav after both arrived in Bhubaneswar as observers.

The BJP secured a majority on June 4 by winning 78 out of 147 assembly seats. With Dharmendra Pradhan serving as a minister in the third Narendra Modi government, attention has shifted to other key figures such as Suresh Pujari from Brajarajnagar and the BJP's Odisha unit president Manmohan Samal, despite Samal's narrow defeat in the Chandbali seat.

Speculation around potential candidates also included Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) and ex-Lieutenant Governor of J&K Girish Murmu, though BJP Odisha in-charge Vijay Pal Singh Tomar denied awareness of Murmu being considered for the CM post. The BJP leadership, known for making unexpected announcements, kept the selection process dynamic.
