New Delhi, July 16: In view of results being announced by major boards in the country, the Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) to ensure results of the current academic year are declared by August 7.

According to the NIOS notification issued on July 10, rescheduled examinations of the secondary and senior secondary examinations were cancelled in the wake of covid-19 pandemic, as per the news agency PTI. The top court passed the order while hearing two petitions that have raised concerns of NIOS classes X and XII examinations in wake of the pandemic.

The same was informed to the bench headed by Justice A M Khanwilkar which said, "Considering the fact that...NIOS has already issued a notification on July 10, 2020, after institution of these petition(s), nothing survives for consideration in the present writ petition(s) except to observe that...NIOS must ensure that the result for the current academic year is declared not later than August 7, 2020."

The bench hearing the plea comprises Justices Dinesh Maheshwari and Sanjiv Khanna. "In other words, the time-line for declaring the results by...NIOS is now specified as August 7," the bench said.

In the notification, NIOS had mentioned that keeping in mind the prevailing pandemic situation exams of secondary and senior secondary course public examination to be conducted on March 2020  were rescheduled to commence from July 17, 2020 but had been postponed and later mentioned it cancelled. One of the petitions had sought the top court's direction for cancelling the pending exams to be conducted by NIOS and also for declaration of results of classes X and XII examinations.

It had stated that conducting the remaining examinations amid the pandemic would pose a health risk to the students.
