New Delhi: At least six people were killed and 11 sustained injuries after a fire broke out in a residential building in Delhi's Zakir Nagar late night on Monday. According to reports, the injured people were immediately taken to the nearby hospital for treatment. At least 20 people people were rescued from the four-storey building in Zakir Nagar, a densely-populated neighborhood near Jamia Millia Islamia University. The blaze in southeast Delhi building broke out at around 2 am.

Exact reason of the fire is still not known but it is speculated that while most of the residents were asleep, the fire began in an electricity box and eventually grappled the whole building. Among the injured are those who jumped off the building to save themselves.

Speaking about the condition of the injured victims, Dr Mala, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at Holy Family Hospital said, "5 patients are in the intensive care unit (ICU), some are in the ward and one is in Pediatric ICU."

Soon after the incident, nine fire tenders rushed to spot and the fire was doused. The narrow lanes of the area caused much trouble for rescue personnel to enter the area and the gutted building. Two of the fire brigade personnel are also said to be injured while saving the residents. Several cars and motorcycles were also reportedly gutted in the fire.

The situation has been brought to control and the fire has been doused. Reacting to the tragic incident, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that he is personally inspecting the incident spot and the cause of fire will be probed. "Shocked to know about the loss of lives in Zakir Nagar fire. I am inspecting the incident spot & Del govt will provide all help to affected families. Cause of fire will be probed," he tweeted.
