New Delhi: Days ahead of the Punjab assembly polls, Navjot Singh Sidhu said that the CM face will not be decided by either him or Sunil Jakhar, but by the people of Punjab.

“It's up to Sunil Jakhar whatever he says, but it's not in his hand nor in mine. People will elect MLAs and then CM will be elected. We've to give people an agenda, model,” Sidhu said. He was speaking at a press conference in Amritsar.

His comment came after Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar said that Charanjit Singh Channi should be given more time to work as a CM. Channi took over as the CM after Captain Amarinder Singh stepped down from the position a few months ago.

“What they decide will be accepted by all. But I'm of the opinion that Channi ji has been given the opportunity, he should be given time so that he continues working. People have seen his good work in four months,” Jakhar had said.

Jakhar had recently stirred political controversies by claiming that 42 out of 79 MLAs of Congress supported him to take over as CM when Captain Amarinder Singh had stepped down.

These statements come while Congress is due to announce its CM face for the upcoming elections and there is stiff competition between Sidhu and Channi.

Meanwhile, Sidhu has started campaigning from the Amritsar East constituency, and Channi said on Thursday that the CM face of Congress will be declared on February 6.

Punjab will go to the polls on February 20, and the counting will be done on March 10.
