Bandipora: The Muslim neighbourhood in North Kashmir’s Bandipora helped perform the last rites of an elderly Kashmiri Pandit woman on Thursday as other members of the family could not arrive for the funeral due to corona lockdown.
According to the locals, the district administration had intensified the lockdown as five more cases of coronavirus were detected in the district from Thursday, the day woman died.
As most of the relatives are living as migrants in Jammu and Delhi, not many could have arrived to help, but as soon as the news of the death of 75-year-old woman Rani Bhatt wife of Moti Lal Bhatt spread, Muslim neighbours came together to help in performing her last rites.
Many people amid Covid-19 pandemic visited the home of the deceased to express condolences with the family.
Locals said that Rani Bhatt died on Wednesday night and today she was cremated with honour. Muslim neighbours performed her last rites as per Hindu religion.
The deceased, a resident of Kalosa, Bandipora died naturally. Her husband Moti Lal Bhatt had not migrated when militancy erupted in Kashmir Valley.
This is the third incident in which Muslim majority neighbours helped in the cremation of minority members in Kashmir.
In early April, Muslims had helped in the cremation of a Sikh carpenter from Punjab who had died in Ganderbal and in Early May, an elderly Kashmiri Hindu man was cremated by Muslim neighbours after his family members failed to come from Jammu and Delhi due to lockdown.
