Cyclone Tauktae: After About 21 Years, Mumbai Records Over 200 MM Rain In 24 Hours

Due to heavy rainfall in Mumbai which broke a 21 year old record there as been a lot of destruction, about 4 people have been reportedly killed by the storm.

Mumbai: The Maharashtra capital saw record breaking rainfall in the last 24 hours due to the cyclonic storm and registered 200mm of rainfall that's the highest since 2000 when it registered just a little over 190mm of rain.

The western region of the country is currently facing Cyclone Tauktae, which has created a lot of trouble for the people in Kerala, Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat and it is heading towards Rajasthan.

Due to heavy rainfall in Mumbai which broke a 21 year old record there as been a lot of destruction, about 4 people have been reportedly killed by the storm, the streets are water-logged, over 400 trees have been uprooted & there has been a lot of damage to property. 

While the cyclonic storm has moved ahead, it has left its signs of destruction behind in the country's economic capital disrupting services and damaging public and private properties. This record will likely wouldn't be much during the monsoon season in Mumbai it is uncommon in the month of May. The rainfall records maintained by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) between 2011 and 2021 state that both Colaba and Santacruz observatories recorded rainfall in May only once in 2017 and it was only 3mm.

Some 127 people were missing Tuesday after a vessel adrift off Mumbai's coast sank during Cyclone Tauktae, the Indian navy said as two ships and helicopters were deployed to assist in the search, AFP reported. The search continues for 127 people who were onboard Barge 305 sunk at Bombay Hight after severe storm hit the coast on Monday evening. The barge had at least 273 people on board.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Chief Ministers of cyclone-affected States-Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Gujarat, and Administrators of Union Territory Dadra And Nagar Haveli to take an update about the situation, and about any help they required from Centre
