Mumbai Rains HIGHLIGHTS: Heavy showers overnight and early Wednesday morning caused waterlogging at many places in the metropolis, disrupting rail and road traffic. According to IMD, the city recorded over 12.20 cms rain while the suburbs notched over 27.50 cms rain most of it during the night. The IMD Mumbai has forecast another wet day with heavy rain as the civic authorities urged people to avoid stepping out unless necessary. Heavy water-logging was reported from the traditional flood-prone areas of central Mumbai like Sion, Matunga, Kurla, Chunabhatti, Mazagaon, Masjid Bunder and Byculla. As per reports, Mumbai and the entire Konkan district including Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Raigad, Thane and Palghar have been inundated by a record downpour since September 22-23 night, bringing normal life to a standstill.
Senior Police Inspector Savlaram Agavane informed that the watchmen pressed the alarm, after which some building residents came down but could not reach them due to increased water-logging.

By the time the fire brigade reached the spot and got in through the lift roof, the two watchmen had died.
In a shocking incident reported earlier today, two security guards died in a Mumbai building as they drowned while being trapped in a flooded lift where they struggled to open its door, a police official informed. They were identified as Jamir Ahmed Sohanan, 32, and Shehzad S Memon, the latter living in the nearby Dongri area.

"I have requested the officials at BMC to work actively and expeditiously on the underground flood control tanks, as the extreme rainfall events increase every year, breaking the records of the past few decades,": Yuva Sena President Aaditya Thackeray has informed.

IMD had earlier informed that suburban Mumbai witnessed actual rainfall of 23.4 mm on Tuesday, which is about 129 percent more than the normal rainfall.

Mumbai has already surpassed its seasonal rain average in the month of August itself. The monthly average rainfall for Mumbai for the month of September is 341.4 mm. Until today, Mumbai has recorded more than 400 mm of rain.
Multiple weather systems are responsible for heavy downpour over Mumbai and suburbs. As per a Skymetweather report, a cyclonic circulation is persisting over the North coast of Maharashtra, the east-west shear zone is also running in the close proximity of Mumbai. The low pressure area over East Madhya Pradesh has a pull effect on monsoon surge over the west coast, the report added.

Meanwhile, the MeT Department has also predicted that Delhi is likely to receive light rainfall on Wednesday, which could be the last precipitation of this monsoon season. There has been no rainfall in Delhi for two weeks. The last time Safdarjung Observatory, which provides representative data for the city, recorded any rainfall (1.3 mm) was on September 8. The capital has recorded only three rainy days this month, the lowest since 2016.

Suburban trains, considered the lifeline of Mumbai, are being operated for essential services employees due to COVID-19 outbreak and common citizens are not authorised to travel in them as of now.

Waterlogging has been reported at Byculla police stn, J. J. Bridge, Minara masjid Jn , Dadar Rly stn , Dadar TT,Bawla compound, Goldeval kapda Gali, Wadi port jn, Hindamata jn, Netaji palkar Rd, Alankar Petrol Pump.




Apart from that areas such as Khetwadi, Gurgaon, Grant Road E, Uranwala Street Alibhai Premji Marg, Grant Rd W, Slator Rd , Cotton Green have also witnessed waterloggin issue. The Andheri subway and Malad Subway have been shut down.

Mumbai's public bus service operator BEST has cancelled or diverted its operations in several routes. Public transport services were hit and normal life affected in the financial capital due to heavy downpour and waterlogging.
Several areas in the suburbs like Goregaon, Malad, Dahisar, Kurla, Ghatkopar, Mulund experienced waterlogging. The Central Railway has suspended suburban services from Chhatapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus to Thane and Vashi. Special mail/express trains have been rescheduled.

Mumbai Rains LIVE UPDATES: Massive rainfall has lashed Mumbai since Tuesday afternoon and is expected to turn more fierce in the city and suburbs today, said the officials of MeT.  Heavy showers overnight and early Wednesday morning caused waterlogging at many places in the metropolis, disrupting rail and road traffic.  Rains across the island city and the western suburbs picked up late Tuesday evening. There were intense spells across Mumbai for a few hours overnight.

The Santacruz observatory (in western suburbs) received 286.4 mm rainfall during the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Wednesday, India Meteorological Department's (IMD) Mumbai told news agency PTI. The Colaba observatory (in south Mumbai) recorded 147.8 mm rainfall during the same period.

Mumbai received one of the highest rainfall in the last 24 hours, an IMD official told the news agency adding that the city and suburbs are likely to receive heavy showers on Wednesday also.

According to the IMD, rainfall recorded below 15 mm is considered light, between 15 and 64.5 mm is moderate and above 64.5 mm is heavy. Since June 1 this year, the Santacruz observatory has so far recorded 3,571.1 mm downpour, while the Colaba observatory has recorded 3,147.3 mm rainfall during the period.

As per latest updates, the heavy downpour has led to waterlogging in many parts of the metropolis on Wednesday, prompting disruption of road and rail traffic. Even public transport services were hit and normal life affected in the financial capital due to heavy downpour and waterlogging.

Several streets and low-lying areas were waterlogged due to overnight rains and the road traffic was also badly hit, a civic official said. Some vehicles broke down in the water, affecting the traffic movement.

Mumbai's municipal commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal has asked that all offices and establishments in the city, barring essential services, be shut on Wednesday due to the downpour and IMD's forecast of "heavy to very heavy rains" in the city.

Even the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has asked Mumbaikars not to step out of their homes, unless it is an emergency. Even the  suburban train services were suspended at 5 am on Wednesday following heavy rains along the tracks.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued an orange alert with a forecast of heavy rainfall at some places in Mumbai and Thane during the day.
