Mumbai: In an appalling incident, a patient admitted to the Rajawadi Hospital in Mumbai’s suburban Ghatkopar area was bitten by a rat near his eye.


The incident took place earlier on Tuesday when the patient named Srinivas Yellappawas, who had recently undergone an eye surgery, was lying in an unconscious state at this hospital run by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).


Rajawadi Hospital Dean Dr Vidya Thakur while commenting on the matter said such an incident should not have happened.

“The injuries of the patient are superficial, still it could have been avoided. There is no threat to the eye, but injuries are being treated at our hospital,” she added.


Dr Thakur said the ward where the incident took place is on the ground floor, adding some people “dump garbage on hospital premises despite being told not to do so” and “it could have attracted rodents there”.


Dr Thakur further said the hospital management would take utmost care to avoid such incidents in future.

Commenting on the same, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar said she has ordered a probe into the incident and added action will be taken against those guilty.


Stating the “patient’s condition is not good”, she said: This should not have happened. We will take necessary action.”
