Overnight Panic Grips Mumbai After Reports Of 'Foul Smell' In Several Areas; 'No Gas Leakage,' Fire Brigade Dispels Fears

BMC said that it received complaints of suspected gas leak from residents of Chembur, Ghatkopar, Kanjumaeg, Vikhroli and Powai.

New Delhi: Mumbai, which is the worst-hit city in terms of Covid-19 infection and which was ravaged by cyclone Nisarga just days before, was gripped by an overnight panic on Saturday night, after complaints of ‘foul smell’ stemmed from several parts leading to apprehensions of gas leakage. However, in the following morning, the Mumbai Fire Brigade allayed the fears of the residents and said that no gas leakage was found in the city, after conducting an hours long search operation involving the use of total 17 fire engines. The fire department also urged people not to panic. Complaints were received from areas including Chembur, Ghatkopar, Kanjumaeg, Vikhroli and Powai

“No gas leakage was found at given locations. Further calls were received from Powai & leakage smell was felt in Andheri. Total 17 fire engines were deputed for the search of gas leakage & it was announced to not panic. Hazmat vehicles were ready for emergency,” The fire brigade said after the operation.

The Chief Fire Officer of Mumbai Fire Brigade said that HPCL (Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited), BPCL (Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited), MGL (Mahanagar Gas Ltd), RCF (Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers) and Police were informed about the gas leak complaints.

In the wee hours, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, in an update to the situation had said that situation was under control and all necessary resources have been mobilized and origin of the smell is being investigated.

It said that 17 fire appliances were on field equipped with public announcement system and ready for response if required.

At 11:45 pm on Saturday night, the BMC said that it received complaints of suspected gas leak from residents of Chembur, Ghatkopar, Kanjumaeg, Vikhroli and Powai.  It also urged the residents not to panic.


Initially 13 fire appliances were dispatched to monitor the situation.
