New Delhi: Guardian Minister of Mumbai Suburban Dist Mangal Prabhat Lodha on Friday ordered Suburban District Collector to remove the name Tipu Sultan given to a garden in the Malad area, as reported by the news agency ANI.

"Finally, victory of the Right! Ordered removal of name Tipu Sultan from the park in Malad after considering the protests by Sakal Hindu Samaj & demand by @iGopalShetty Ji in the DPDC meeting", Lodha said in a tweet. Last year MVA govt had named the ground after Tipu Sultan and we had to protest it! The park was named during the MVA government's tenure and BJP had opposed this nomenclature.

Last year in January, the Bharatiya Janata Party, staged a protest against the 'naming' of a renovated garden after Tipu Sultan in Mumbai, and said that the 18th century Mysore ruler persecuted Hindus and his name was unacceptable for a public facility.

However, Maharashtra minister Aslam Shaikh who inaugurated new facilities at the garden in the Malvani area stated that it always bore the name of Tipu Sultan, and there was no fresh nomenclature.

Workers of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, Bajarang Dal, and Vishwa Hindu Parishad staged a protest at the venue, demanding a renaming after Shaikh, a Congress leader and guardian minister of Mumbai City, attended the event. Just a few days after the protest in 2022, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar had said that there is no garden officially named after Tipu Sultan by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
