Mulayam Singh Yadav was cremated with full state honour in his ancestral village of Saifai amid chants of "Netaji Amar Rahe" (long live Netaji) by a sea of crowd. Mulayam Singh Yadav, the founder-patron of Samajwadi Party and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister breathed his last on October 10 after a prolonged illness at Gurugram's Medanta Hospital.

"We had a very strong relationship. Mulayam Singh Yadav was a big personality in Indian politics, it is a huge loss for the country. We all have come here to pay our tribute to him. PM Modi could not come here but he asked me to pay tribute on his behalf," said Defence Min Rajnath Singh, quoted by news agency ANI
Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan, son and actor Abhishek Bachchan also reached Saifai to attend the last rites.

Mulayam Singh Yadav who started as a primary school teacher stepped his foot into politics in the year 1967 winning a seat in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. In the year 1992, he founded the Samajwadi Party.
He was a five-time Parliamentarian who got elected to Lok Sabha in 1996, 1998, 2004, 2009, 2014, and 2019.
From 1989 to 1991, 1993 to 1995, and 2003 to 2007 he served as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.
The veteran leader served a Defence Minister in the Indian government from 1996 to 1998.
