On Monday, the shocking video went viral where he was seen brutally beating his wife with whom he has been married for 32 years.
As per the showcause notice, his actions were in violation of the All India Services rules and therefore, he was directed to give his clarification on why disciplinary action should not be taken against him.
After the video went viral, Purushottam Sharma who is a 1986 batch IPS officer had said, "This is a family matter, not a crime...I am not a criminal. My wife stalks me wherever I go. I am dealing with this."
The incident took place after Sharma was confronted by his wife over his relation with a local news anchor. The anchor has filed a police complaint against the wife and son of the IPS officer, accusing them of tarnishing her reputation. She has claimed that Sharma's wife made a video-recording of her bedroom when Sharma had once visited her, which was made viral on social media by Sharma's son, making "baseless allegations" against her. "DG Saab (Sharma) is like my father and he used to call me 'beta'," she said.
Sharma's son Parth, who is a deputy commissioner in the Income Tax Department, sent the video of Sharma attacking his mother to state Home Minister Narottam Mishra and some senior bureaucrats, and requested that a complaint be registered against his father. The state women's commission has summoned Sharma on October five and also directed it to provide security to his wife.
